BACK TO WAGERING GUIDE

How to place a hockey wager - 1/2 puck & moneyline

Betting on hockey is different from football and basketball since not enough points are scored to make the point spread wager feasible. Hockey has the additional complication of frequent ties and multiple betting systems, however, making a bet at a sportsbook is still an easy process and ticket writers are more than willing to assist you. For the convenience of both the house and player, the best way to make a wager is to use the numbers assigned to each team by the official Nevada Sports Schedule. For the purposes of this discussion and for a point of reference, let's assume you wish to place a bet on the following game, using the 1/2 puck & moneyline appearing on the tote board as followed;

101 Montreal

102 New Jersey   -.5, -170

Difficulty Level: Intermediate     Time Required: 2 minutes

Here's How:

  1. The team's assigned number is the number to the left of each team. In our above example, Montreal is #101 and New Jersey is #102.

  2. This game will be referred to as game "101/102" with Montreal being team #101 and the New jersey being team #102.

  3. The number to the right of the team is the puck & money for that team, with the number always being listed beside the favorite. In our above example, the Devils are an enormous favorite, are giving the 1/2 puck, plus a player betting New Jersey must risk $1.70 for every $1.00 he wishes to win.

  4. Hockey uses a minimum .20 cent line, so in this example, a player betting Montreal would recieve the 1/2 puck and $1.50 return on every $1.00 wagered.

  5. The home team is always listed on the bottom unless a neutral site is noted. In our above example, New Jersey is the home team.

  6. If a player decides to bet on New Jersey they would go to the window and declare "I would like $17 to win $10 on team #102, Devils less the half puck".

  7. If a player decides to bet on Montreal they can go to the window and declare "I would like $10 to win $15 on team #101, Canadiens plus the half puck"..

  8. If New Jersey wins by 1 goal or more, all those who bet on the Devils would win $10.00 for every $17.00 they bet, thus collecting $27.00 for every $17.00 wagered.

  9. If Montreal wins or if the game ends in a tie, all those who bet on Montreal would win $15.00 for every $10.00 they bet, thus collecting $25.00 for every $10.00 wagered.

  10. The Puckline and the Straight Money Line are two other ways to bet on NHL hockey.
